Introduction

We are seeking a reliable, responsible, mature married couple to serve as live-in house-sitters for a private residence encompassing wooded hillsides, meadows, bogs, and lakeshores of rural Washington County in Downeast Maine.  The focus of this couple’s work will  be on security, basic upkeep, and care of the owners’ home and property for extended periods.

Position Overview

The selected couple will live on-site and oversee the property as if it were their own.  Duties center on maintaining the home and grounds, ensuring security, and handling routine maintenance. The setting is peaceful and secluded, with limited nearby services, so self-sufficiency and comfort with rural living are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reside full-time on the property and provide a continuous presence for security and care.
  • Perform light housekeeping and keep the interior clean, tidy, and ready for the owners’ return.
  • Monitor and maintain the property grounds (lawn, basic landscaping, snow removal in winter as needed, and general upkeep).
  • Oversee basic systems (heating, plumbing, electrical, well and septic) and promptly report and resolve issues with these facilities.
  • Stoke and operate wood furnace to keep the house comfortably warm through cold periods.
  • Ensure the full-service back-up electrical generator is fully fueled, functional, and all set for automatic switch-over.
  • Manage mail, packages, and any deliveries.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of the owners and property.
  • Communicate regularly with the owners regarding property status.
  • Handle emergency situations calmly and contact appropriate local services when needed.

Ideal Candidates

  • Mature, married couple with proven experience in house-sitting, property care, or rural living preferred.
  • Self-motivated, trustworthy, and detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable with isolation, limited internet/cell service in places, and the practical realities of rural Maine (winters, wildlife, dirt roads, etc.).
  • Physically able to perform moderate outdoor work and light indoor maintenance.
  • Enjoy outdoor activities (fishing, boating, snowmobiling, gardening) and other outdoor sports and activities, as well as having indoor hobbies and interests (woodworking, crafts).
  • Familiar with life in Eastern Maine, especially Washington, Hancock or Aroostook counties.
  • Clean background and excellent references required.
  • Non-smokers strongly preferred; pets allowed include dogs or birds.
  • Valid driver’s licenses required; reliable transportation recommended.

Compensation & Arrangement

  • Private living quarters provided on-site, including large, recently renovated master bedroom, master bathroom, and private office.  (Please note that these lodgings cannot suitably accommodate children.)
  • Compensation includes a monthly salary plus living expenses.  Details will be agreed upon based on the candidates’ experience and length of stay.
  • Amenities and utilities include satellite video and internet, window-mounted air conditioning, wood furnace heating, propane stove and hot water, portable dishwasher, and large clothes washer and dryer.
  • Start of employment would be between October 1 and November 1, 2026, and continue to at least July 15, 2027.

Thank You for your Interest in this Position!

We look forward to welcoming the successful candidates to our home to share the experience of a comfortable life in this lovely and historic home amidst its beautiful woodlands and picturesque lake.
