Responsibilities and Scope: Provides security, janitorial, small repair and maintenance in a 24 unit residential apartment building and three houses (27 beds). We are a charity who provides housing and support for individuals in recovery and living with mental health illnesses. Availability most evenings and week-ends is required. We estimate this is a half time position with the ability to flex time as duties require and permit. A non-smoking two bedroom apartment is available for the successful applicant in lieu of salary. This position reports to a full time Manager of Supportive Housing.
General Duties
1. Maintain clean, safe facilities and surrounding property conducting cleaning, regular maintenance and repairs as needed.
2. Monitor safety of premises and quiet enjoyment of all tenants.
3. Promote and maintain cordial relationships with each tenant.
Skills and Abilities:
a. Two to three years’ experience as a caretaker. Training in Building Management/Maintenance or equivalent is an asset. Ability to use hand and power tools in a safe and responsible manner. Experience as a handyman: repairs, drywall, painting, minor plumbing and minor electrical repair required.
b. Ability to communicate in English verbally and in writing. Other languages, such as Farsi, an asset.
c. Ability to use cell phone, text, email and word processing.
d. Excellent time management skills; diligent and completes work in a timely and thorough manner. Honest, trustworthy and possesses excellent cultural awareness and sensitivity.
e. Ability to work independently, take initiative and demonstrate sound work ethics.
f. Physically fit - may be required to move heavy furniture, equipment and supplies (up to 50 lbs.)
g. Familiarity with the Residency tenancy act and regulations and WHIMS
h. Thorough knowledge andcomplianceof agency policies and procedures including safety policies.
i. Familiarity with mental health first aid and de- escalation techniques or willingness to develop skills.
j. Access to a car/van an assist.
